In 1948, just one year before Newfoundland and Labrador entered into confederation with Canada, Payne's Shopping Centre was established. Some 53 years ago, Wentzell's General Store, as it was then called, is one of the few remaining general stores of that era on Newfoundland's "Great Northern Peninsula".

From the days when merchants controlled the livelihoods of local residents, to their present day dependence on locals and tourist, Payne's Shopping Centre has evolved to be one of the largest general stores in the area. From Rocky Harbour in the south, to Port Saunders in the north, nowhere will you find such a selection of products and supplies under one roof.

While it has modernized in its products, services, and name, Payne's Shopping Centre has maintained its historic touch. The atmosphere inside the store is one of pre-confederation times in Newfoundland and Labrador, when hospitality was what the Province was known for.
