Should
hunters and outfitters in Newfoundland and Labrador
be concerned about the slight decrease in annual harvest
totals for big game hunting in Newfoundland and Labrador?
Since the mid 1960's, the Government of Newfoundland
and Labrador has done an extraordinary job of managing
our moose, caribou, and black bear populations. However,
managing wildlife populations is not an easy task. (There
are up's and down's) Right now the provinces overall
wildlife population is in a slight downward trend. The
government is taking the appropriate action to combat
this trend and in a year or two the population will
begin its upward trend once again. Estimates show that
our wildlife population is very healthy with moose populations
still the largest in North America and one of the world's
most healthy herds of woodland and barren ground caribou.
There is no reason to be concerned about a very small
decrease in total annual harvest. It's nothing more
than a tool used by wildlife and big game managers to
control populations.

Many
Newfoundland hunting and fishing outfitters operate
fly in operations and therefore there is limited access
to these areas and thus limited hunting and fishing
by locals. Other outfitters provide hunting and fishing
services to sportsmen from a lake side hunting or fishing
lodge, usually accessible by forest access roads or
by boat. More
There
are hunting and fishing outfitters in Newfoundland that
provide
luxurious accommodations and others that operate from
comfortable wilderness type hunting and fishing lodges.
More
